JOB DESCRIPTION:  The school bus driver will operate school buses under all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice; transport students and other authorized persons over regular to and from school routes, and on field, extracurricular and special or extra activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1. Minimum age 21.  High School diploma/GED required. 

2. Must possess valid Washington State Driver's License with good driving record for the last five (5) years, minimum.

3. Must possess or willing to obtain a Washington State Commercial Driver's License Class B with passenger and air brake endorsements.

4. Must possess ability to meet physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in the job description.

5. Previous experience working with young people preferred.

6. Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job related activities.

7. Must possess sufficient strength and ability to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door.

8. Must possess sufficient strength and agility to move about in an overturned bus as required to provide assistance to students in evacuating the bus.

9. Must meet physical requirements adequate to pass Dept. of Transportation physical for bus drivers.

10. Must have evidence of ability to manage large groups of young people.

11. Must be able to pass drug and alcohol testing program.

12. Must possess First Aid/CPR card or be willing to obtain one as a condition of employment.

13. Evidence of excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability; evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.

14. Positive job evaluations and recommendations.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  The bus driver will:

1. Drive a school bus on scheduled routes, both within and outside the school district boundaries.

2. Service, inspect and clean school buses and related equipment as required by State and district policy.

3. Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety; report unsafe acts or conditions which required the attention of any person other than the driver.

4. Complete forms, records and reports as required by the State or local school district policies.

5. Successfully complete school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the school district.

6. Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies declared by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

7. Perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kiona-Benton City School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.

8. Perform other school bus driver related duties as directed by local school district policies.

9. Accomplish all tasks in a professional manner.  Model appropriate and healthy adult behavior.  Interact with people and speak in a manner that reflects community standards of politeness, civility and human sensitivity.


JOB RELATED TASKS:  The bus driver will:

1. Operate and service all school bus equipment and accessories including but not limited to fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, sanders, first aid kits, etc.

2. Perform required operational and safety inspections of the school bus and all related equipment.

3. Clean and service the school bus to include interior/exterior sweeping and washing, installation of fuel, oil and coolant, tire inflation, etc.

4. Operate all hand and foot controls installed in a school bus as required by Washington State (minimum) school bus specification.

5. Perform basic first aid as appropriate which may include CPR.

6. Complete clerical tasks as assigned: legible and accurate completion of forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route studies, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports and other clerical activities as may be required.

7. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

1.  PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit, kneel and crouch, twist and bend, use hands, and talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 - 75 pounds or more.  The employee may be required to physically move quickly while performing student supervision duties.

 

2. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to weather extremes, including wet and/or humid conditions.

 

3. Completion of Bloodborne Pathogens/CD Safety Training is a condition of employment.
